GPS navigation just got a little easier with the TomTom Go 300. Requiring no installation or setup, the Go 300 delivers clear spoken instructions in 32 languages, with concise vocal descriptions of each turn to take and stop to make. Should the default voice get on your nerves, don't fret, as you can select more than 50 other voices to narrate your path. The voice's volume level is even linked to the speed of the car--the faster you go, the louder the instructions. At the same time, the built-in GPS receiver displays its preloaded U.S. maps using clear, colorful 3D graphics, helping users see the road ahead without requiring a degree in cartography. It's simple to set a course: just define your waypoints and destinations, and then choose which route to take (quickest, shortest, or toll-road-free). It all depends on the sites you want to see and the path you want to travel.
Appropriately for a product named "Go," the most convenient feature is its out-of-the-box utility. The user literally unpacks the Go 300, plugs it in, and goes, though it's helpful to take the guided tour first to fully appreciate the possibilities. In addition, because of the unit's integrated GPS antenna and compact housing, one can move the Go 300 from one car to another with little effort. And should the internal antenna prove spotty, the Go 300 can also connect to an active external antenna (not included) that attaches to the outside of the car.
The Go 300's unique touch-screen activation eliminates the hassle of dealing with extra buttons or unnecessary hardware when calculating your route. Navigators will also appreciate the 3.5-inch TFT anti-glare screen, which offers an optimal view at all times, even in direct sunlight. And thanks to the improved on/off button, it's harder than ever to turn off the device by accident.
Additional features include a dynamic, customizable status bar; a compass mode that helps you keep your orientation while driving; and a 1 GB Secure Digital memory card that stores map information. Users can upload other maps directly from their PC without attaching cables by using the Go 300's built-in wireless Bluetooth connection, or they can opt to employ the USB 2.0 port instead to receive a faster transfer rate. The device, which measures a compact 4.5 by 3.6 by 2.3 inches (W x H x D), comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that lasts for approximately five hours per charge. The battery recharges conveniently through the included AC charger or cigarette lighter charger.
